Welcome to Dr Morrison Says

Dr MorrisonThe World Health Organisation’s definition states that ‘Health is much more than the absence of disease; it is an active state of well-being.’

Herbal medicine or Phyto-therapy is the science of using medicinal plant remedies to treat illness, and, just as importantly, to maintain good health.  This means that herbs can be taken for general well-being and prevention of disease, as well as for established ill health.

The current surge of interest in herbal medicine began in the 1960’s and has been expanding ever since.  It is driven by an underlying sense of dissatisfaction with modern medicine.  There is increasing apprehension of pharmaceutical drugs and their side effects.  There is fear of the trauma of surgery and it’s complications.  Also brief consultations are unsatisfactory for both doctor and client.  In contrast, the wholistic health practitioner, with a longer time spent with each client, is now filling the role of health advisor, surrogate counsellor  and support person.

Historically the usage and evidence of effectiveness of herbal plants has been based on tradition and anecdotal information.  However in recent years there has been an upsurge of scientific research into herbal plants which supports their usefulness.

One of the aims of this website is to promote a better understanding of herbal plants both in terms of the philosophy behind phytomedicine and general information about a number of commonly used medicinal  herbs.
A further purpose is to present my personal view on some medical matters.
